COVID-19 + Mental Health

There’s been a lot of discussion around the impact of the initial period of lockdown on our mental health and how we were going to cope with the massive changes that long periods of remote working and social distancing would bring to most of us. The focus has now shifted to how we can move forward, as a country and as an economy. But while we’re looking at how we can move forward responsibly and safely, the discussion around mental health is far from over.

I was really interested to come across this article in Cosmopolitan (link below), discussing Idris Elba’s interview with the Radio Times and his comments on the impact that contracting COVID-19 had had on his wellbeing, and the pressure he felt to speak out about his experience because so little was known at that early stage. The Cosmopolitan article also references Maggie Astor, a US-based reporter who experienced difficulty in breathing and wasn’t sure whether that was down to illness or anxiety.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the impact of this pandemic are felt over the coming months and years - hopefully we’ll continue to see an increased focus on mental health & wellbeing, with discussions from celebrities adding to the voices breaking down the stigma.

Mental health needs to be bought to the forefront and talked about along side Covid-19.  We have all dealt with it differently and we will all come out of it from a unique position. Weighing in on the long-term psychological effects of quarantine and coronavirus, PTSD, Anxiety, & Depression are common reasons as to why many individuals are seeking therapy. At this stage, we don't know what we will be dealing with over the next few months.
